The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) has this week unveiled its new, vibrantly wrapped vehicle that will be used for transporting rescue cats and dogs waiting for their forever homes.
The 2016 Hyundai iLoad was a community-backed purchase thanks to grants from the Buderim Foundation and the Rotary Club of Sunshine Coast Central, along with many individual donations by local supporters.
SCARS Patron Penny Brischke said the initiative to raise funds for a new vehicle started in May 2023 when the refuge’s existing vehicle was taken off the road due to old age.
“When our old refuge van finally gave up, it was clear we would need the support of our community and local organisations as large transport vehicles are a significant financial investment. We are so grateful for the generosity we have been shown with this project,” Ms Brischke said.
SCARS was lucky enough to be the recipient of one of the largest Buderim Foundation Community Grants for 2023, which significantly buoyed fundraising efforts.
Buderim Foundation chair Rod McKinnon said the Foundation was very pleased to award SCARS $10,000 as part of the 2023 Community Grants program.
“Our domestic pets play an important part in many of our lives, and we are very pleased to assist SCARS to purchase this van which helps them in their vital work to ensure animals in need are cared for properly,” Mr McKinnon said.
“The 2023 Buderim Foundation Community grants round awarded more than $97,000 to 21 local community organisations, bringing the total grants provided to the community to $829,767 since they began in 2008.”
Ms Brischke said the most critical use of the Refuge vehicle is to transport cats and dogs that require speciality medical treatment at an external veterinary clinic.
“However, we also utilise our van to take dogs on out-of-refuge walks, to collect food donations, to bring in animals for veterinary care when the owner is homeless and to drop off or collect animals from foster carers or the Council Pound when required.
“On top of the Buderim Foundation Grant, there were many parties involved in helping make this a reality for our cats and dogs,” Ms Brischke said.
“Thanks also to Rotary Club of Sunshine Coast Central for their major donation, along with all those who pledged funds toward the van purchase at the 2023 Paws for a Cause Long Lunch, as well as to Sunshine Toyota who helped us source the van at a discount and Sign and Wraps Warana for their incredible artwork and significant discount of the vehicle wrap.
Buderim Foundation Community Grants program offers grants of up to $10,000 for local organisations with initiatives that make a positive impact on the local Buderim community.
