Surf Lifesaving boats will take to the Mooloolah River for the first The Wharf Mooloolaba Super Sprint on Saturday 21st March, endorsed by Australian Surf Rowers League Queensland (ASRLQ).
The Super Sprint races will see teams from all over the country competing on a straight course over around 300metres finishing in front of The Wharf Mooloolaba’s commercial jetty.
The Wharf Mooloolaba co-owner Dirk Long said the races would be great for spectators who could watch up to 40 male and 30 female crews competing from 8.30am to 12.30pm.
“Part of why everyone loves The Wharf is its spectacular river location, so we are really pleased to bring this event to the precinct in conjunction with ASRLQ,” Mr Long said.
ASRLQ Sunshine Coast representative Corey Stone said the competition was open to all divisions and was free to enter.
“It will be an open event with just Male and Female categories racing in two boat elimination sprints over a distance of around 300m. Competitors will be seeded in the first round, as this is open to all age divisions,” Mr Stone said.
“After the first-round races, winning heat competitors will race for the inaugural The Wharf Mooloolaba Super Sprint Cup and $500 in prize money. Those who came 2nd and 3rd in the heats will compete for The Wharf Mooloolaba Super Sprint Plate and $250 in prize money.”
“We have already had strong interest from Clubs and expect this to become an annual event – we can’t wait.”
